About the OBJ format
OBJ is a simple text format for 3D models, developed by Wavefront Technologies and today saved and read by most 3D programs. It is used, for example, for models from 3D scanning, visualisation and games.
The OBJ file itself stores the geometry. Colours and materials are in an .mtl file next to it, and the textures in ordinary image files.
What the viewer shows
- The model with materials and colours from the .mtl file
- Textures from the image files, when they are opened together with the model
- Sections through the model and measuring between points
- Size, volume and surface area
How to open an OBJ file
Open the viewer
Press “Open an OBJ file”. The viewer opens with a sample assembly.
Pick the file
Press Open and choose the file, or drag the file into the viewer.
View and measure
Rotate with the mouse, and use Section and Measure for sections and measurements.
Good to know
Open the whole folder (Open folder), or select the OBJ, MTL and image files together. Otherwise the surfaces are shown in their base colour, and the viewer says which files are missing.
OBJ stores no unit. Pick the unit at the bottom right of the viewer.
Questions and answers
Why is my OBJ model grey?
The materials are in the .mtl file and the textures in image files. Open them together with the OBJ file, for example by opening the whole folder.
Are the textures sent to a server?
No. All files are read in your browser. If a texture is missing, the viewer shows the surface without the image and says which file is missing.

ShapeReach View also opens these formats and several more.
