About the DXF format

DXF is a format for 2D and 3D drawings that almost every drawing and CAD program can save and read. It is used to exchange drawings and to send outlines to laser, waterjet and plasma cutting and to CNC.

A DXF file stores the drawing’s entities, such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions and hatches, organised in layers and blocks.

What the viewer shows

  • The drawing with all its layers, which you can hide and show one by one
  • Blocks, text, dimensions, hatches and linetypes
  • The drawing’s layouts
  • Measuring between points on the drawing
  • DXF from R12 to the newest versions

How to open a DXF file

  1. Open the viewer

Press “Open a DXF file”. The viewer opens with a sample assembly.

  2. Pick the file

Press Open and choose the file, or drag the file into the viewer.

  3. View and measure

Zoom with the mouse wheel, hide layers in the list on the left, and measure with Measure.

Good to know

Yellow and cyan text and lines are drawn darker, so they can be read on the light background.

The unit is normally stored in the file, and measurements are shown in it. Otherwise it can be picked at the bottom right of the viewer.

Questions and answers

Can I open DWG files?

Not directly. Save the drawing as DXF in your drawing program, and it opens here with layers, blocks, text and dimensions.

Can I view a DXF file without a CAD program?

Yes. Open the file here in your browser. You can zoom, hide layers and measure without installing anything.

Other formats

ShapeReach View also opens these formats and several more.
