  • .glb

About the glTF format

glTF is an open format from the Khronos Group for 3D models on the web, in apps and in AR. It is made to be loaded and shown quickly.

GLB is the same model packed into one binary file. A .gltf file is a text file that typically has its geometry in a .bin file and its textures in image files next to it.

What the viewer shows

  • Materials with colours and textures
  • Compressed textures (KTX2)
  • The model’s parts in a list
  • Sections, measuring, size, volume and surface area in metres, which glTF uses

How to open a glTF file

  1. Open the viewer

Press “Open a glTF file”. The viewer opens with a sample assembly.

  2. Pick the file

Press Open and choose the file, or drag the file into the viewer.

  3. View and measure

Rotate with the mouse, and use Section and Measure for sections and measurements.

Good to know

A .gltf file with separate .bin and image files has to be opened together with them: open the whole folder, or select all the files together.

Animations are not played. The model is shown in its rest pose.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between glTF and GLB?

It is the same format. GLB packs everything into one binary file, while .gltf is a text file that refers to other files.

What unit is glTF in?

Metres. The glTF standard uses metres, and the viewer shows measurements in metres unless you pick another unit at the bottom right.
