About the 3MF format
3MF is a newer format for 3D printing, developed by the 3MF Consortium. A 3MF file is a zip file with the model described in XML, and most slicers use the format for their projects.
Unlike STL, 3MF can store colours, materials and several objects with their placement in one file.
What the viewer shows
- Every object in the file, with colours
- Slicer projects whose objects are in several files inside the 3MF file
- Lattice structures (beam lattice)
- Sections, measuring, size, volume and surface area
How to open a 3MF file
Open the viewer
Press “Open a 3MF file”. The viewer opens with a sample assembly.
Pick the file
Press Open and choose the file, or drag the file into the viewer.
View and measure
Rotate with the mouse, and use Section and Measure for sections and measurements.
Good to know
3MF files with the extensions for mathematically defined shapes (implicit) and volume data (volumetric) are not shown.
The slicer’s settings, such as layer height and infill, are not shown. The viewer shows the models.
Questions and answers
What is the difference between 3MF and STL?
STL stores only a triangle mesh. 3MF can also store colours, materials and several objects in one file, and the file is compressed.
Can I open a project from my slicer?
Yes, when the project is saved as 3MF. The viewer shows the models from the project, but not the slicer’s settings.
